The Real Problem
The most common ecommerce design failures aren't about aesthetics — they're about conversion architecture. Six patterns we see on almost every store audit.
A visually impressive store is not the same as a high-converting one. Most ecommerce design work optimizes for how the site looks in a Figma mockup — not how buyers move through it under real conditions.
Over 70% of ecommerce traffic is mobile, but most stores are designed desktop-first and adapted down. The result: product images that don't load correctly, CTAs that are too small to tap, and checkout flows that drop off at the address step.
Every Shopify app you install injects scripts into your storefront. The cumulative effect — 8–12 apps later — is a 6-second load time that kills paid traffic ROI before a visitor ever sees your product.
Product detail pages should answer the buyer's remaining questions and remove friction at the point of decision. Most PDPs bury the add-to-cart button, use stock copy, and lack the social proof and trust signals that close the sale.
Stores built over time accumulate mismatched fonts, button styles, color inconsistencies, and layout drift across pages. Buyers perceive this as unprofessionalism — it erodes trust at the precise moments you need it most.
Design decisions made without heatmaps, session recordings, and funnel analytics are guesses. We use behavioral data to identify where buyers are dropping off — then design to fix the specific friction points that are costing you revenue.
How We Work
Six stages — from conversion audit to post-launch performance validation. Every decision is grounded in data before it becomes a design.
Before redesigning anything, we analyze your existing store: heatmaps, session recordings, funnel drop-off points, and Core Web Vitals. Every design decision is grounded in where buyers are currently dropping off.
We map your actual buyer paths — collection to PDP to cart to checkout — and identify the specific friction points at each transition. The design brief comes from this data, not from aesthetic preferences.
We wireframe the critical pages (homepage, collection, PDP, cart, checkout) in low-fidelity before touching visual design. This is where conversion decisions are made — layout, hierarchy, CTA placement, trust signals.
Brand aesthetics applied to the conversion-optimized wireframes. Typography, color, imagery, and interactive states — designed in a consistent system, not page by page.
Custom Shopify theme development (or custom sections within your existing theme). Every component is built for performance: lazy loading, deferred scripts, optimized image delivery, and minimal JS weight.
Post-launch: Core Web Vitals measured on real devices. Lighthouse scores on key pages. PageSpeed benchmarks before and after. We don't ship a redesign without confirming it's faster than what it replaced.
What We Design & Build
Six page types and systems where ecommerce design decisions have the highest revenue impact.
Above-the-fold value proposition clarity, hero section A/B test readiness, social proof placement, and navigation that guides — not just organizes.
Filter UX, grid layout, product card hierarchy (image, title, price, variant selectors, trust badges), and category-level editorial content placement.
Image gallery, variant selectors, add-to-cart prominence, trust signals (reviews, badges, guarantees), sticky ATC on mobile, and objection-handling content placement.
Cart drawer vs. cart page decision, upsell placement, checkout trust signals, address form UX, and payment method display — all of it matters to completion rate.
Script consolidation, image optimization pipeline, lazy loading implementation, font subsetting, and app script deferral — getting Core Web Vitals to green on real mobile devices.
A documented set of reusable Shopify sections and UI components your team can use to build future pages without introducing visual inconsistency.
Case Studies
Three stores where design changes, not more traffic, produced measurable revenue growth.
Problem
Strong paid traffic but 1.8% store conversion rate. Heatmap analysis showed 74% of visitors were leaving the PDP without scrolling past the first product image. The add-to-cart button was below the fold on mobile.
What We Did
Rebuilt the PDP with a sticky mobile ATC, moved reviews above the fold, restructured the variant selector to show color swatches instead of a dropdown, and consolidated 4 trust badge rows into a single clean bar. Rebuilt the image gallery with zoom on mobile.
Outcome
PDP conversion rate increased from 1.8% to 3.4% in 60 days. Monthly revenue increased $52K on the same paid traffic spend. ROAS improved from 2.1x to 3.9x.
Problem
Moving from Magento to Shopify Plus with a requirement to maintain their existing design language. The previous agency's Shopify theme was 8.2 seconds LCP on mobile due to 14 installed apps and unoptimized image delivery.
What We Did
Custom Shopify theme built from scratch against their brand design system. Replaced 6 app functions with native Shopify features or custom Liquid. Implemented responsive image srcsets, lazy loading, and deferred non-critical scripts. Built a component library of 22 custom sections.
Outcome
LCP reduced from 8.2s to 1.9s on mobile. Bounce rate on collection pages dropped 24%. First 90 days on new theme: 31% revenue increase attributed to improved conversion rate (same traffic, higher CVR).
Problem
High add-to-cart rate (8%) but low checkout completion (22%). Cart abandonment analysis showed buyers were encountering the shipping cost for the first time at checkout — not before. Trust signals were absent from the cart experience.
What We Did
Redesigned the cart drawer to show estimated shipping costs (free shipping threshold progress bar), added trust badges (30-day returns, secure checkout), moved the discount code field out of prominence (it was distracting buyers), and added a product image with variant details in the cart line item.
Outcome
Cart-to-checkout conversion improved from 22% to 41%. Annual revenue impact of approximately $180K on unchanged traffic and AOV.
